Fairtrade Sustainability
Fairtrade
As an international movement and in partnership with 2 million farmers and workers, Fairtrade has a vision of a world in which all producers enjoy secure and sustainable livelihoods, fulfil their potential, and decide on their future.
Fairtrade changes the way trade works, through better prices, improved working conditions and a fairer deal for farmers and works in developing countries. By choosing Fairtrade products, people can create change through their everyday actions and farming communities can live improved lives and invest in their future.
The University of Exeter is one of many institutions leading the way, by becoming Fairtrade affiliated. Staff and students across our campuses have expressed a desire to consume more ethically.
Your Event
If you are planning an event, here are just some things you may wish to consider –
What We Do
- All tea, coffee, hot chocolate and sugar served on campus is Fairtrade
- Fairtrade soft drinks can be served within our event soft drinks bucket packages
- We have regional commodity solutions within our menu offering
- Fairtrade wine can be ordered for events on campus

What You Can Do
- Consider using Fairtrade or ethically sourced giveaways to your delegates. This should include any cotton items such as tote bags and any food and drink items.
- Exhibitors should consider that any printed t-shirts on sale are made from either Fairtrade or ethically sourced cotton.
- Any flower decorations should be Fairtrade or ethically sourced
- There should be NO plastic bags available at events on campus – opt for cotton tote or paper bags instead.
- Offer a reusable bottle/keep cup with refillable stations and water fountains. Where possible, discourage single use plastics.
- Carefully consider the amount of food being ordered, ensuring there are no large amounts of food waste at the end of the event.
- Please consider a plant rich menu or reduce the amount of meat offered at your event.
