British Science Festival 2023
University of Exeter x British Science Association
Objective
To engage new and underrepresented audiences with science, showcase world-leading research in an accessible format, and build lasting civic and community partnerships across Exeter and the wider region.
Execution
Held in September 2023, the University hosted the British Science Festival - Europe’s longest-running science celebration. Over 70 events took place across campus and city venues including Exeter Cathedral, the Guildhall, and Phoenix Arts Centre. The programme featured interactive workshops, headline BBC recordings, and a major college outreach strand. Nine local organisations received grants to run their own science-inspired activities, while free sustainable travel options supported low-carbon access.
Results
The Festival welcomed 7,200 attendees, with 93% saying they felt more informed about the University’s research. It reinforced the University’s civic vision, boosted local engagement, and set a new benchmark for inclusive science events.
“Exeter has been a wonderful partner… the Festival encouraged hands-on, participatory activity and was praised for its openness, inclusivity, and friendliness.”
