BRITISH SCIENCE FESTIVAL 2023

Event Exeter's partnership with the British Science Association to deliver the British Science Festival 2023 shows how careful event planning can turn a science festival into an inclusive city-wide experience, reaching thousands of visitors and reinforcing the University of Exeter's standing as both a research leader and a community focussed institution.

Objective

When the University of Exeter partnered with the British Science Association to host the British Science Festival 2023, the main goal was to make science more accessible, inclusive, and engaging for everyone. This wasn’t just a series of academic talks in lecture theatres, it was about transforming Exeter into a buzzing hub of discovery, conversation, and creativity.

Event Exeter’s role was central to this transformation. From managing the venues to supporting the logistics of city-wide programming, our focus was on delivering an inspiring and accessible festival experience, while showcasing the University’s world-leading research in a way that truly connected with the wider community.

Execution

The festival ran from 7th–10th September 2023, welcoming thousands of visitors to over 70 free events across campus and the city. Venues ranged from the University’s Streatham Campus and the Forum to city landmarks like Exeter Cathedral and the Phoenix Arts Centre. This multi-location approach allowed us to design experiences that were both accessible and immersive, bringing science into everyday spaces.

The festival took place over four days and welcomed thousands of visitors to over 70 free events on campus and across Exeter. Venues were prepared to host everything from live BBC recordings and driving simulators to escape rooms, art installations, and interactive workshops. As always, there was a heavy focus on sustainability. Transport options were tailored to reduce environmental impact and promote low-carbon travel for attendees.

Behind the scenes, Event Exeter ensured smooth logistics across multiple days, venues and partners. Our team worked closely with both university departments and city stakeholders to create a consistent, welcoming environment across all locations.

Results

The festival welcomed over 7,200 attendees in total, with 93% reporting they felt more informed about the University’s research.

The city-centre venues helped position the University as an active civic partner, while the community-led events built lasting local connections. As a result, the festival not only showcased Exeter’s research excellence but strengthened its role as a community-focused institution.

By blending creative programming with meticulous planning and a people-first approach, Event Exeter helped deliver one of the most impactful British Science Festivals to date.
