4 Great Things To Do In Exeter

Exeter is a small city, but it packs a lot into its beautiful streets. Aside from exploring its interesting history you’ll find a huge range of exciting things to do in Exeter.

If you’re coming on a city break this summer, here are four things to get you started.

Hit The Shops

Exeter is crammed full of incredible shops and retail therapy is one of the easiest things to do in Exeter, with so much on offer. Princesshay is a modern shopping complex that offers over 70 shops, cafes and restaurants. Featuring outlets like AllSaints, Reiss and Hollister this is where to head when you want the major names.

For something more quirky and individual it’s worth checking out the shops on Fore Street. Here you’ll find lots of independent stores like the blossoming arts shop No Guts No Glory and famous guitar shop Mansons Guitars who make guitars for Muse among other big names.

Go Wild

City breaks aren’t just about shopping and sightseeing. Inject some adrenaline into your stay by indulging in some adventurous activities.

A quick stroll from the town centre takes you to Exeter’s historic Quay and here you’ll find a variety of fun challenges. Drop into Clip ‘n Climb where you can try your hand at rock climbing, bouldering and abseiling. Definitely one of the most fun things to do in Exeter, and suitable for all abilities.

If you’re not up for something so strenuous then across the River Exe you’ll find Saddles & Paddles. You can hire a bike and enjoy cycling on the flat cycle paths along the Exe, or rent out a canoe or kayak and see Exeter from the water.

Enjoy Great Food

After all that you’ll probably want to relax with some good food. Exeter is a foodie’s paradise. You’ve got all your major big name restaurants like Wagamama, Carluccio’s and Strada and more recently new eateries in the Guildhall. These include: The Stables, The Terrace, Pho, Absurd Bird, Comptoir Libanais and Gourmet Burger Kitchen.

If what you fancy is a delicious take on the good old burger then a visit to Five Guys on Queen Street is worth a visit. With its cool atmosphere, friendly service and wide variety of burgers it’s an ideal location for fuelling up before the evening kicks off.

Catch A Gig

Exeter has a lively music scene and enjoying a gig is one of the best things to do in Exeter in the evening. Many of the city’s bars and pubs playing host to local bands, but if you want something with a bit more edge check out the Cavern. You’ll find everything from cutting edge indie to heavy metal and drum n bass.

The nearby Exeter Phoenix often plays host to a variety of touring bands across the musical spectrum, with indie legends Augustines due to play on the 26th of July. The Phoenix is also host to Exeter’s ale and cider festival at the end of August.
